HAMMER'S NEW HOUSE
The students of NRL Cowboys House have their very own rugby league role model with the appointment of North Queensland Toyota Cowboys fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow as their 2021 player ambassador.
The Cowboys 2020 Rookie of the Year is the House's first official player ambassador, bringing the 104 students and staff even closer to the team and enabling the young secondary students to learn more from their player about how to achieve their dreams through hard work, persistence and dedication.
Hamiso was born in Cairns and has family ties to Saibai Island in the Torres Strait, identifying with the shark, crocodile and cassowary as their totems.
NRL Cowboys House is currently home to students from Saibai and 27 other remote communities, making a beautiful connection between 'Hammer' and his young friends.
The 19-year-old flyer has plans to work with young people in his post-football career, and is looking to undertake studies in youth services in conjunction with his House role.
As player ambassador, Hamiso will visit NRL Cowboys House for key events, milestones and casual drop-ins where his training and playing schedule permits.
General Manager – NRL Cowboys House Rochelle Jones said Hamiso was already becoming a familiar figure on campus.
"On his first visit, our kids were initially just in awe and very shy around him, but they were soon their happy, cheeky selves when they realised he's just a bigger, faster version of them."
"We love having Hamiso drop in and we feel very fortunate to have him as a role model for our young people," she said.
The 2021 NRL Cowboys House shirts worn by Hamiso and the students feature the unique design by Indigenous artist Jesse James entitled “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dreamtime Unity”.
This design represents strong connections between two cultures – the Rainbow Serpent and Kangaroo are strong in the Aboriginal culture’s beliefs, as is the Turtle and Dugong in the Torres Strait Islander culture. Black and white hands working together in unity and the flow on both sides are the Aboriginal communities connected and the Torres Strait Islander communities connected.
